Charles D. Amsler is a Professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on Marine Ecophysiology and Chemical Ecology, particularly in Antarctic marine communities and the impacts of climate change. He has conducted extensive studies on macroalgae and bacterial behavior in chemical environments.
- Education:
- B.A., Duke University
- M.S., University of North Carolina at Wilmington
- Ph.D., University of California at Santa Barbara (Biological Sciences)
His work integrates field studies in Antarctica with laboratory-based chemical ecology experiments, examining how organisms interact chemically in extreme environments. Dr. Amsler’s postdoctoral research at the University of Illinois at Chicago informed his current focus on behavioral responses of bacteria to chemical signals. He is currently not accepting new graduate students.
Key areas of exploration include the role of chemical defenses in Antarctic marine organisms and the vulnerability of these communities to environmental changes. His research has significant implications for understanding biodiversity and ecosystem resilience in polar regions.
