Prof. Ruth Hunter is a Professor at the Centre for Public Health, Queen's University Belfast. She leads research on improving urban environments for population and planetary health, focusing on systems science, complexity modeling, and environmental interventions. Her work integrates methods like network analysis, causal inference, and computer vision to address non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and urban health disparities.
Current projects include directing the WHO Collaborating Centre for complex systems research and leading the UKPRP GroundsWell Consortium, which applies systems science to urban green/blue spaces. She also leads the SPACE project (ESRC-funded) investigating urban environments' impacts on cognitive aging and the A Vision of Healthy Urban Design initiative using computer vision for urban form analysis.
Her research has secured over £12M in grants from UKPRP, NIHR, MRC, ESRC, and GCRF-British Council. Awards include the 2017 Best Paper in IJBNPA and 2015 Career Development Fellowship. She advises WHO expert panels on urban health and serves on the NIHR Public Health Research panel.
