Ben Wheeler is a Professor in Environment, Health and Inequalities at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health (ECEHH) at the University of Exeter. His research focuses on environment-health interconnections, including climate change impacts, environmental epidemiology, and health equity. He leads interdisciplinary projects funded by ESRC, NERC, and the European Commission, translating evidence into policy at local and global scales. As co-director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Natural Environments and Health, he bridges research and practice to improve public health outcomes.
Education: PhD in Social Medicine from the University of Bristol (UK), followed by postdoctoral roles at Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand), University of Sheffield, and Bristol. Prior experience includes public health work in the NHS and environmental consultancies.
Research interests include climate adaptation, spatial data applications, and the health benefits of natural environments. He collaborates extensively with policymakers and communities to address environmental health challenges. His work on green-blue spaces and mental health has been pivotal in shaping evidence-based interventions.
Grants and Projects: Major funding from ESRC, NERC, NIHR, Wellcome Trust, and the EU. Key initiatives include the REGREEN project and GroundsWell, focusing on urban green infrastructure and health equity.
Labs/Teams: Leads the WHO Collaborating Centre and participates in Exeter’s Environmental Intelligence and Biodiversity & People research networks. His work supports the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 10, 13, 15, and 11.
