Dr Rebecca Lovell is a Senior Lecturer at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, a WHO Collaborating Centre on Natural Environments and Health within the Department of Public Health and Sports Sciences at the University of Exeter. Her work focuses on synthesising and translating evidence of the links between natural environments and health for policy and practice, with particular emphasis on green social prescribing and nature-based interventions.
Her educational background includes:

Dr Lovell's research spans interdisciplinary investigations into how natural environments contribute to human health and well-being. She employs rigorous evaluation methodologies including randomized controlled trials and realist evaluations to assess nature-based interventions. Her work addresses critical areas such as biodiversity renewal, mental health therapies through nature exposure, urban green space accessibility, and the implementation of green social prescribing programs at scale.
She actively contributes to major national and international initiatives through leadership roles in projects like RENEW, RESONATE, and GROUNDSWELL, which examine biodiversity, nature-based therapies, and urban natural space inequalities respectively. Her research directly informs policy development for organizations including WHO, Defra, and Natural England.
Dr Lovell serves on multiple advisory boards including as Health Champion for the Cornwall and Isle of Scilly Local Nature Partnership. She co-leads the University's Masters programme in Environment and Health and a CPD programme on Nature and Health, demonstrating strong commitment to education and knowledge translation across governmental, NGO, and community contexts.
