Professor Ruth Garside is a social science researcher at the University of Exeter Medical School, based at the European Centre for Environment and Human Health within the Department of Public Health and Sport Sciences. With over 20 years of experience, her work specializes in systematic review and evidence synthesis methods to inform policy decisions for organizations including NICE, Defra, and the Home Office, focusing on complex public health, social care, and environmental questions.
Her academic foundation includes:
- PhD (Exeter, 2007): A comparison of methods for the systematic review of qualitative research
- MA (Sussex, 1993)
- BA (Hons) (York, 1991)
Garside's research pioneers methodologies for synthesizing qualitative and mixed-method evidence, particularly for complex public health interventions. She is internationally recognized for advancing nature-based social prescribing (e.g., green/blue spaces for mental health) and embedding public and patient involvement throughout the research lifecycle. Her recent work critically examines health inequities across diverse populations and interventions, ensuring evidence reflects real-world applicability and equity.
Analysis of her recent publications shows a clear trajectory toward environmental health solutions (e.g., climate adaptation, pollution impacts), innovative synthesis techniques (causal loop diagrams, theory-led reviews), and rigorous assessment of health disparities. Her editorial work on "Evidence Synthesis for Accelerated Learning on Climate Solutions" underscores her role in bridging evidence and urgent policy needs.
Professor Garside has secured substantial funding for high-impact projects including the national evaluation of green social prescribing for mental health (Defra), the Greengage RCT pilot, and Horizon Europe's BlueAdapt initiative. Through the HEPE public engagement network and Campbell/Cochrane leadership roles, she actively mentors researchers and ensures community voices shape grant design, execution, and dissemination.
She co-leads the UK Centre for the Collaboration for Environmental Evidence and chairs the Public Engagement Strategy Group at Exeter. Her collaborative networks include the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, the Cochrane Qualitative and Implementation Methods Group, and international consortia like the Seas, Oceans and Public Health in Europe project, driving interdisciplinary approaches to environment-human health linkages.
