Dr. Ruth Herbert is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Music & Audio Technology at the School of Arts, City St George's, University of London. She previously held positions at the University of Kent, Open University, and Dartington College of Arts, and was a British Academy Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Oxford. Her interdisciplinary research bridges music psychology, consciousness studies, health and wellbeing, and participatory arts.

Her research focuses on the phenomenology of music in everyday life, particularly absorption, trancing, and dissociation. She explores music’s role in health, neurodiversity (especially autism), and consciousness, employing ecological and 4E cognition frameworks. Her work integrates empirical, phenomenological, and arts-based methodologies.
Her recent publications examine participatory arts interventions for autistic girls, multisensory trancing, and music’s impact on youth mental health. She co-edited Music and Consciousness II (OUP, 2019) and authored Everyday Music Listening (Routledge, 2016). Her articles span journals like Frontiers in Psychology, Psychology of Music, and Journal of Sonic Studies, reflecting trends in interdisciplinary music cognition, consciousness, and arts-health research.

Ruth supervises PhD students on topics including musicians’ mental health, creative skill development, and gender in jazz. She is a Co-Investigator on the CREATE grant (UKRI) studying arts-based approaches to adolescent loneliness. As a professional pianist, she performs with Triptych, creating soundtracks for silent films. She is also a trustee for the National Youth Jazz Collective and Beyond Divisions Education Trust, and serves on editorial boards for Musicae Scientiae and Journal of Sonic Studies.
