Joshua Pilzer is an Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the Faculty of Music, University of Toronto, and an affiliate of the Centre for the Study of Korea. His research examines music's role in trauma, survival, and identity formation, focusing on modern Korea and Japan.
Key research areas include women's musical practices, music and public culture, mass media, disability studies, and the interplay between music, violence, and memory. He explores how music functions as a life resource and the 'musical' qualities of everyday practices.

His graduate seminars cover fieldwork, sound and identity, and music's intersection with culture and health. Undergraduate courses emphasize ethnomusicological theory, East Asian musics, and themes of violence and survival.
