Kip Pegley

Kip Pegley is an Associate Professor at Queen's University's Dan School of Drama and Music within the Faculty of Arts and Science. He holds cross-appointments in the Department of Gender Studies and the Department of Film and Media. His research explores intersections of music with violence, gender, and political contexts, particularly focusing on music's role in military and post-conflict contexts, national identity, and media representation.

Education: Bachelors in Music Education (Dalhousie University), MA and PhD in Ethnomusicology/Musicology (York University), and a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Toronto. He joined Queen's as a Queen's National Scholar in 2002.

Research interests include: music and war, trauma and memorialization, Canadian military veterans' experiences, media studies, and the politics of music consumption. His notable works include Coming to You Wherever You Are (2008) and co-edited Music, Politics, and Violence (2012). He has been funded by SSHRC for projects analyzing music's role in Canadian military narratives.

Recent publications examine Canadian soldiers' use of music during Afghanistan deployments and the entanglement of music with Canadian political discourse on social media. His work bridges musicology with cultural, military, and critical theory.
