Roles and Affiliations: Gordon E. Smith is a Professor and Director of the Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts at Queen’s University. He holds affiliations with the DAN School of Drama and Music and has served in multiple administrative roles, including Vice-Dean (2013-2021), Interim Dean (2016-2017), and Director of the School of Music (2003-2006).
Education: A.R.C.T. (Piano), B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Toronto.
Research Interests: Dr. Smith’s work centers on ethnomusicology, particularly Canadian representation, Indigenous cultural resurgence through music, and the role of music in Mi’kmaw communities (e.g., Eskasoni, Cape Breton). His research examines funeral rituals as sites of tradition/modernity, decolonization in music education, and the intersection of music with Indigenous healing and identity. Current projects include collaborative work on Mi’kmaw poet Rita Joe’s poem “I Lost My Talk” and digital archives for Indigenous music curricula.

Collaborative Work: Engages with Indigenous elders, families, and community leaders to co-create research. Leads projects on cultural preservation and Indigenization in academic programs. Guest-edited Intersections (2015) and serves as Editor of MUSICultures.
