Associate Professor Ruth Barraclough is affiliated with the School of Culture, History & Language at the Australian National University (ANU), where she previously served as Director of the Korea Institute (2020-2022). Her academic background includes a BA (Hons) from the University of Queensland and a PhD in East Asian Studies from ANU (2004), focusing on the labor and literature of Korean factory girls.
Her research interests span labor history, gender studies, Korean literature, and biography. Notable works include Factory Girl Literature: Sexuality, Violence and Representation in Industrializing Korea (2012), which became a bestseller in Korea and was nominated for the President's Summer Reading List. She co-authored Red Glamour: Korea's Early Communist Women (forthcoming with Columbia University Press), exploring the role of communist women in Korea's early 20th-century movements.
Dr. Barraclough has held prestigious roles, including Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Minnesota (2006-2007), Visiting Scholar at Columbia University's Centre for Korean Studies (2013-2014 and 2017), and National Library of Australia Fellow (2018). She sits on the editorial board of the Korean Association of Women's History journal and is an international member of the Korean Association for Feminist Literature.
Her research has been supported by grants such as the Overseas Leading University Program for Korean Studies (2011-2016). She actively engages in public scholarship, including contributions to the East Asia Forum and Australian Outlook. Current projects emphasize transnational feminist histories and the intersection of labor movements with cultural production.
