Kyrie Vermette serves as a Sessional Lecturer in the Department of Asian Studies within the Faculty of Arts at the University of British Columbia. She is concurrently pursuing her PhD while teaching in the department's Korean studies program.
Vermette's research specializes in Korean women's history during the colonial period, with particular focus on the interactions between Korean women and foreign women living in Korea. Her scholarly work examines how colonial ideologies of race and gender were experienced and expressed through women's cross-cultural relationships, primarily analyzing encounters with North American missionary women and Japanese settler women. She completed her MA in East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto with a thesis entitled "Like Mother, Unlike Daughter: Perspectives and Relationships between Missionary Women in Korea and Korean Women, 1884-1910."
Her academic work contributes to understanding gender dynamics within Korea's colonial history, offering nuanced perspectives on women's experiences that extend beyond traditional political and military narratives of the period. Vermette's research represents an important intersection of gender studies, colonial history, and Korean studies.
