Russell Vernum is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, De Montfort University (DMU), where he also serves as the Programme Leader for RIBA Part 3 and leads on Professional Practices & Ethics. With over 30 years of professional experience in architectural design and delivery, he brings extensive industry expertise to his academic role.
His research and teaching focus on redefining architectural typologies, modular design, reuse and recycling, and mental health design. He has led projects in urban regeneration, healthcare facilities for dementia and autism, and international developments in Oman, Shanghai, and Bulgaria. Russell has a strong interest in digital fabrication, having contributed to a research project linking point clouds with CNC manufacture.
Russell is actively involved in professional and academic communities, serving on the editorial board for the Design Leicestershire book and as an event board member for the Design in Mental Health Conference. He is also a Professional Examiner for the Part 3 architectural qualification and occasionally teaches at Cardiff School of Architecture as a guest tutor.
His professional experience includes roles as design manager, client-side architect, and supervision of projects valued over £50 million. He has delivered major infrastructure and building projects for organizations such as the Highways Agency and the Ambulance Service, including a state-of-the-art technical center for Peugeot.
