Tim Barwell is a Senior Lecturer at De Montfort University (DMU), affiliated with the School of Arts, Design and Architecture within the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities. He holds professional qualifications from the Architectural Registration Board (ARB) and the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and brings over two decades of architectural practice experience into his academic role.
Tim earned his architectural education at The Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, completing all three parts of professional qualification: BSc(Hons) (Part 1), PGDip Arch/MArch (Part 2), and Professional Practice and Management in Architecture (Part 3). His academic journey was distinguished by accolades, including the Shephard Robson Sustainable Innovation Award and recognition as a standout graduating student by Building Design magazine.
His research expertise spans biodiversity in architecture, sustainable materials, digital and analogue fabrication, architectural installations, and innovative technologies. He emphasizes public access to architecture and has pioneered initiatives such as the national Architecture Apprenticeship Forum. His teaching roles include Programme Leader for the Level 7 Architect Apprenticeship, Year Lead for MArch 01, and Design Studio Tutor in the Master of Architecture program.
Tim has been recognized for his excellence in teaching, receiving the Faculty Teaching Award for Innovative/Adaptable Lecturer in 2022/23. His earlier awards include the Shephard Robson Award for Innovation and Sustainability in Architecture (2007) and the European Lighting Design Winner for Low Energy Lighting (1999).

Tim has extensive industry experience, having worked at award-winning firms including Wilkinson Eyre Architects (two-time Stirling Prize winners) before founding his own practice in 2011 focused on sustainable design and broadening access to architecture. He is a founding member of the National Architecture Apprenticeship Forum and has served as an invited lecturer and critic internationally, including at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York.
He contributes to architectural discourse through publications such as 'Protoarchitecture: Analogue and Digital Hybrids' in Architectural Design and 'Bartlett Ideas: Speculating with Architecture' (Wiley). His professional memberships include ARB and RIBA, reinforcing his standing in both academic and practice communities.
