Russell Johnston is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication, Popular Culture and Film at Brock University. He holds a PhD in History from Queen’s University at Kingston, alongside an MA in History and a BA in History and Philosophy from McMaster University and Queen’s University respectively. His research focuses on media history, particularly advertising, radio, and print media, as well as popular memory and cultural heritage.
Johnston’s work explores intersections between media, politics, and cultural identity. Notable projects include co-authoring the Canadian edition of Communication Research Methods (2012) and studies on Canadian advertising history and urban war memorials. His publications often blend historical analysis with contemporary sociocultural contexts, such as examining Niagara Region wine heritage and partisan media strategies in early 20th-century Canada.
He teaches courses on cultural industries, the history of advertising, sport media, and research methodologies.
