Andrew Johnston is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at NC State University and Director of the Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media (CRDM) program. He holds affiliations in the Film Studies Program and the Ph.D. in Communication, Rhetoric, and Digital Media. His research focuses on film history, animation, media archaeology, and digital humanities, with a particular emphasis on computational technologies and archival practices. Johnston’s work bridges theoretical analysis and historical examination, exploring how media forms shape cultural and artistic expression.
Johnston earned his Ph.D. in Cinema and Media Studies from the University of Chicago (2011), an M.A. in American Studies from the University of Maryland (2004), and a B.A. in English and American Studies from the College of William and Mary (2001).
His research interests include avant-garde film, color aesthetics, and the historical development of digital media. His award-winning book, Pulses of Abstraction (2020), investigates abstract animation’s role in redefining cinematic and computational media landscapes. Recent articles have explored the emergence of CGI, the theoretical implications of code in media, and experimental animation techniques from the 20th century.
Johnston’s contributions span interdisciplinary collaborations, including directing CRDM and participating in initiatives like the Khayrallah Center for Lebanese Diaspora Studies. His work emphasizes the intersection of technology, art, and cultural memory.
