Russell Callahan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Connecticut. His research focuses on understanding bedrock weathering processes and their interactions with ecological, geomorphic, and hydrological systems. He employs geophysical methods (e.g., electrical resistivity, seismic refraction), geochemical analysis, cosmogenic nuclides, and remote sensing to explore these dynamics. Dr. Callahan holds a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Wyoming and a B.S. in Environmental Science from Montana State University. He teaches ERTH 3710: Engineering and Environmental Geology.
His work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, addressing topics such as rock moisture dynamics, subsurface water storage, and vegetation-driven weathering feedbacks. Recent studies investigate how bedrock fracture patterns, climatic conditions, and tectonic activity influence weathering and landscape evolution.
