Rudolf Haken is a Professor of Viola and Electric Strings at the University of Illinois, directing its pioneering Electric Strings program. He leads the Electric Strings Ensemble and Hip-Hop Collective, offering degrees blending music with fields like Computer Science and Engineering. His work merges classical traditions with contemporary genres, including metal and electronic music. Haken is renowned for performances on extended-range violas (Rivinus five-string and Wood Viper six-string electric), appearing globally with orchestras in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.

Research interests focus on innovative instrumental techniques, cross-genre composition, and music technology. Notable works include Violin Concerto for Stefan Milenkovich (2011 premiere) and Faust (2012 Chicago premiere). His recordings, such as the Centaur CD, have received critical acclaim. Haken’s performances at festivals and institutions worldwide highlight his versatility, from Bach interpretations to electrifying metal-inspired compositions.
Recipient of the 2007 Critics’ Choice award for his concerto recordings, Haken’s pedagogical contributions include jury roles for international orchestras and masterclasses across 3 continents. Upcoming engagements include a 2022 residency at Germany’s Bayreuth Young Artists Festival with 22 UI students.
