Rubén Gomez Sanchez is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Groningen, Faculty of Medical Sciences, working in the Department of Biomedical Sciences within Fulvio Reggiori's Lab. His research focuses on autophagy mechanisms, particularly in relation to neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson's disease.
He obtained his PhD in Biomedicine from the University of Extremadura (Spain) in 2013, with his doctoral work focusing on the role of PINK1 protein in mitochondrial damage sensing and mitophagy. His academic journey includes research stays at University College London and University Medical Centers in Utrecht and Groningen.
Gomez Sanchez's research primarily investigates autophagosome formation using yeast as a model system, with particular interest in membrane contact sites, Atg proteins, and their roles in cellular degradation processes. His work bridges basic cell biology with clinical applications in neurodegenerative disorders. His research methodology combines genetic, biochemical, and advanced microscopy techniques to study autophagy pathways.
