Professor Roy Gibson is a Classics scholar affiliated with Durham University's Department of Classics and Ancient History and the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. He holds a BA (1987) and PhD (1993) from Cambridge University, and previously served as a Junior Research Fellow at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (1992-94) and Professor of Latin at the University of Manchester (1994–2018). His research focuses on Roman literature, particularly Cicero's Ad Familiares, Ovid, Pliny the Younger, and Roman epistolary practices. He currently leads the AHRC-funded Ancient Letter Collections project.

Research interests include Roman epistolography, Augustan poetry, and the intersection of ethics and literature in Pliny and Plutarch. His 2020 monograph on Pliny the Younger redefines biographical approaches to Roman elites. Recent articles explore Pliny’s rhetorical strategies in panegyrics and Cicero’s epistolary grief narratives.
Recipient of the Classical Association (UK) Chairmanship (2013–2020). Active in public engagement through school talks on ancient letters and letter collections, particularly Cicero and Pliny.
Supervises PhD candidates on topics like Ovid, Roman love elegy, and Pliny. Directs the AHRC Ancient Letter Collections project, fostering interdisciplinary research into letter-writing traditions.
Led collaborative projects on classical text commentary methodologies and ancient authorship practices.
