Rowena Ivers serves as an Honorary Associate Professor at the Sydney School of Public Health within the University of Sydney's Faculty of Medicine and Health. With over 25 years of clinical experience primarily in Aboriginal health settings across New South Wales and the Northern Territory, she maintains active roles in medical education, research, and clinical governance. Her affiliations include membership on the RACGP Ethics Committee, Illawarra Shoalhaven PHN Clinical Council, and RACGP Quality Committee.
Her research focuses on critical gaps in Indigenous healthcare delivery, particularly in Aboriginal primary care systems, tobacco and alcohol programs tailored for Indigenous communities, primary care-based cancer pathways, lactation support, and health financing models. Her work consistently bridges clinical practice with public health frameworks to address systemic inequities.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals dominant themes in Indigenous health equity (60% of works), cancer care pathway implementation (20%), and substance use interventions (15%). Her methodology emphasizes community-controlled health services, randomized trials in real-world settings, and culturally safe implementation frameworks.
- 2002 Inaugural Chris Silagy Fellow, Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
Ivers actively supervises PhD candidates while contributing to national medical education through GP registrar training and Master's-level curriculum development. Her current projects include the NHMRC Optimise study as Research Fellow, CRE in Indigenous Health and Alcohol trials, and Illawarra AMS Cancer Care Team collaborations. She leads initiatives translating research into practice through Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services with significant grant support from Cancer Australia.
