Professor Gail Garvey, a Kamilaroi woman and NHMRC Leadership Fellow, is a Professor of Indigenous Health Research at the University of Queensland’s Faculty of Medicine. Her work focuses on cancer outcomes and wellbeing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, leading initiatives like the TACTICS CRE (Targeted Approaches to Improve Cancer Services). She pioneered research on psychosocial aspects of Indigenous cancer care and developed tools like the Optimal Care Pathway guidelines. Garvey has secured over $50M in grants, including an NHMRC Investigator Leadership Grant, and published over 180 peer-reviewed articles. She co-founded the National Indigenous Cancer Network and convened the World Indigenous Cancer Conference. Her leadership emphasizes collaboration between Indigenous communities, researchers, and clinicians to address health inequities.
Education: Initially trained as a teacher, Garvey began her research career at the University of Newcastle in the 1990s, focusing on Indigenous medical student retention.
