Roser Matamala is a Scientist at Argonne National Laboratory and holds Fellow positions at the Northwestern-Argonne Institute of Science and Engineering and the UChicago Consortium for Advanced Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on ecosystem-level carbon, water, and energy cycles with emphasis on human-induced changes from land-use and climate change.
Her educational background includes:
- M.Sc. in Biological Sciences from University of Barcelona
- Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from University of Barcelona
- Research Associate position at Duke University prior to joining Argonne in 2000
As an ecologist and biogeochemist, Dr. Matamala specializes in belowground systems including plant-soil-microbe interactions. Her methodological approach integrates field chronosequences (space-for-time substitution), manipulative climate change experiments, laboratory analyses, eddy covariance monitoring, spectroscopy, and stable isotope techniques. Since 2011, she has led Department of Energy-funded projects characterizing Arctic tundra soil organic carbon stocks and developing mid-infrared spectroscopy for rapid soil property prediction. Current work examines climate adaptation of bioenergy crops across continental gradients and ARPA-E/NSF-funded sensor development for root and soil moisture monitoring.
Dr. Matamala has published over 50 scientific articles, book chapters, and technical reports advancing understanding of soil carbon dynamics across wetlands, forests, grasslands, cropping systems, and arctic tundra ecosystems. Her DOE Biological and Environmental Research projects demonstrate sustained funding for large-scale environmental investigations.
She maintains active affiliations with Argonne's Environmental Science division and collaborative frameworks through Northwestern University and University of Chicago partnerships.
