Rose Abramoff is an Assistant Professor of Forest Science at the University of Maine’s School of Forest Resources. Her research focuses on climate change impacts on the land carbon cycle, particularly belowground processes in forests, soils, and Arctic tundra ecosystems. She holds a Ph.D. from Boston University, a Biogeoscience certificate from Boston University, and a B.A. from Amherst College. Prior to joining UMaine in 2025, she held postdoctoral and staff roles at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Le Laboratoire des Science du Climate et de l’Environnement.
Her research integrates field measurements, large dataset synthesis, machine learning, and simulation modeling to study plant-soil interactions, microbial dynamics, and climate feedbacks. Key areas include soil carbon sequestration, Arctic permafrost degradation, and the role of microbial communities in biogeochemical cycles. She co-teaches SFR 521: Research Methods in Forest Resources and SFR 605: Modeling Ecological Data, emphasizing quantitative methods and R programming.
Recent work highlights the urgency of addressing uncertainties in soil carbon modeling and critiques carbon offset markets for equity issues. Her publications span soil biogeochemistry, climate policy, and Arctic ecosystem dynamics, with a focus on bridging micro-scale microbial processes with macro-scale climate predictions. She advises Cameron Chin (M.S.) on forest soil nitrogen and carbon cycling.
