Roscoe Scarborough is Chair of the Department of Social Sciences and Associate Professor of Sociology at the College of Coastal Georgia. He holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Virginia (2015), with a dissertation on cultural architectures of belonging and inequality. His academic career includes roles such as Visiting Assistant Professor at Franklin & Marshall College (2015–2018) and Graduate Instructor at the University of Virginia (2011–2015).
His research focuses on Culture, Inequality, Media, and Public Sociology. Notable work examines firefighters’ decision-making ethics, academic labor inequities, and cultural consumption patterns in media. He has published in Sociological Forum, Journal of Consumer Culture, and Poetics, among others.
Scarborough’s recent work critiques contingent faculty treatment in higher education (Journal of Public and Professional Sociology, 2024) and analyzes social tensions in emergency services. He contributes op-eds to The Brunswick News on topics like public health, inequality, and sociopolitical trends.
His teaching spans sociology courses with a focus on linking theory to real-world issues. He emphasizes service-learning projects, such as addressing homelessness through community engagement.
