Rosanne Jepson is Professor of Small Animal Internal Medicine and Nephrology at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), where she serves as a recognized RCVS, ACVIM, and ECVIM Specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine and founding member of the American College of Veterinary Nephrology and Urology. Her clinical work at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals (QMHA) encompasses minimally invasive urological procedures, co-direction of the renal replacement unit, and leadership of the Infection Protection and Control Committee.
Education:
- University of Bristol (Graduated 2003)
- Rotating Small Animal Internship at RVC
- PhD from RVC on 'Proteinuria and the kidney' evaluating hypertension in feline chronic kidney disease
Her research focuses on feline and canine renal disease pathogenesis, biomarker discovery for chronic kidney disease (CKD), and systemic hypertension mechanisms. She pioneered work on fibroblast growth factor 23 in geriatric cats and established the RVC Geriatric Cat Clinic for aging feline studies. Clinical interests include laser lithotripsy, ectopic ureter correction, and CRGV (Alabama Rot) treatment via plasma exchange.
Recent publications (2016-2019) reveal three dominant trends: 1) CRGV epidemiology and plasma exchange therapy in dogs, 2) Feline CKD biomarkers (magnesium, uromodulin, FGF23), and 3) Hypertension consensus guidelines and amlodipine pharmacodynamics. Her work bridges clinical practice and molecular research, with 60% of articles focusing on feline renal pathophysiology.
Scientific Awards:
- International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) Prize (2012) for feline CKD research
- BSAVA Blaine Award (2021) for Small Animal Nephrology contributions
- Fellow of the Higher Education Authority
Professor Jepson co-supervises two post-doctoral researchers in feline CKD-mineral bone disorder and oxidative stress, while mentoring numerous undergraduate and postgraduate projects in nephrology and infection control. Her research grants support senior cat clinics, CRGV investigations, and platelet function studies in acute kidney injury through collaborations with BIOMICS Centre (St George's Hospital) and international veterinary networks.
Labs & Teams: She co-directs the QMHA extracorporeal therapies team for dialysis/plasmapheresis, leads the Geriatric Cat Clinic at Beaumont Sainsbury's Animal Hospital, and participates in the RVC Kidney Special Interest Group. Current projects include CRGV pathogenesis, feline mitochondrial dysfunction in CKD, and antimicrobial stewardship protocols for urinary tract infections.
