He has served as Vice Principal for Research and Innovation at RVC for 16 years, leading research strategy and submissions for RAE2008, REF2014, and REF2021. His research focuses on renal, cardiac, and vascular diseases in companion animals, with a particular emphasis on chronic kidney disease (CKD) in cats. He holds leadership roles in organizations such as the European College of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology and chairs the Petplan Charitable Trust Scientific Committee.
Education:
- 1985: DVM, Cambridge University Veterinary School
- 1986: Internship, University of Pennsylvania Veterinary Hospital
- 1989: PhD in Vascular Biology, University of Cambridge
- 1990: RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Cardiology
Research Interests: Elliott’s work spans pharmacology, renal physiology, and clinical management of CKD. His studies address calcium and phosphate homeostasis, renal fibrosis, and biomarker development. He also investigates laminitis in ponies and nausea management in dogs with vestibular disease.
Publications: Over 150 peer-reviewed articles, focusing on CKD pathophysiology, renal biomarkers, and pharmacological interventions. Recent work includes modeling CKD in cats using artificial neural networks and evaluating anti-nausea therapies.
Awards:
- BSAVA Woodrow Award (2019)
- PetPlan Scientific Award (2005)
- European Society of Nephrology & Urology Award (2007)
Advising & Grants: Led major research initiatives at RVC, including VetCompass studies on CKD prevalence in cats. Collaborates with industry (e.g., Ceva) and chairs funding panels (UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship).
Labs/Teams: Member of the Comparative Physiology & Clinical Sciences research program. Involved in interdisciplinary projects on feline renal disease and equine laminitis.
