Rosalyn L. Cooperman is Professor of Political Science and Chair of the Department of Political Science and International Affairs at the University of Mary Washington (UMW). She is a leading scholar in American government, congressional campaigns and elections, and women in politics, with a strong record of research, teaching, and public engagement.

Dr. Cooperman’s research focuses on the political behavior of Democratic and Republican party activists, women’s candidacy in Congress and state legislatures, campaign finance structures, and the dynamics of party polarization. Her work has been published in top-tier journals such as the Journal of Politics, American Political Science Review, and Social Science Quarterly.
Her recent publications explore themes such as the role of rightist women in democratic systems, the influence of party activists in presidential elections, and the structural barriers women face in political candidacy. These works collectively highlight her expertise in gender and politics, campaign dynamics, and party behavior in the U.S. political system.

Dr. Cooperman has also served as a principal investigator for the Convention Delegate Study since 2004, a major survey of party delegates. In 2016 and 2018, she contributed as a policy expert for Gender Watch, a collaboration between the Center for American Women in Politics (CAWP) at Rutgers University and the Barbara Lee Family Foundation. Her prior professional experience includes roles as a campaign manager, congressional intern, and committee aide, giving her unique practical insight into the political process.
She frequently contributes to public discourse on women’s representation and electoral politics, including appearances in national and regional media. Dr. Cooperman is actively involved in mentoring students and fostering civic engagement across the UMW community.
