David A. Dulio is a Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Oakland University and Director of the Center for Civic Engagement. He has served at Oakland University since 2002, progressing from Assistant Professor to his current Distinguished Professor status in 2023. He also holds a fellowship at the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies at American University.
Dulio earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from American University in 2001, with fields of study in American Politics, Public Administration, and Methodology. He completed his M.A. at American University in 1999 and received his B.A. in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in 1995.
Dulio's research focuses on American politics with particular expertise in campaigns and elections, congressional politics, political parties, campaign finance, and political consultants. His work often examines Michigan politics specifically, analyzing electoral competitiveness, ballot proposals, and congressional districts. He has conducted significant research on the role of digital media in politics, studying how platforms like YouTube and social media affect voter learning and campaign strategies. His scholarship also explores the relationship between political parties and consultants, foreign policy in congressional campaigns, and women's representation in political consulting.
His publications reveal a consistent focus on practical aspects of American electoral politics, with numerous edited volumes on congressional campaigns and Michigan government. His recent work continues to examine the evolving landscape of political communication, particularly how digital platforms transform campaign strategies and voter engagement. His research often blends theoretical political science with practical campaign insights.
Dulio has served as Chair of the Department of Political Science at Oakland University from 2010-2018 and currently directs the Center for Civic Engagement. He teaches courses including Introduction to American Politics, Congress and the Legislative Process, Elections and Voting Behavior, and Political Campaigns.
As Director of the Center for Civic Engagement, Dulio has organized numerous community events, debates, and discussions, including the 2022 Michigan Gubernatorial Debate. He regularly engages with media outlets as an analyst and commentator, appearing on major networks including NBC, CNN, Fox News, and local Detroit stations, and writing for publications like the Detroit News and Oakland Press.
Dulio's work extends beyond traditional academic boundaries through his active participation in community engagement initiatives, public commentary, and bridging academic research with practical political understanding. His Center for Civic Engagement serves as a hub for connecting university resources with community needs, particularly around democratic participation and civil discourse.
