Rachel Porter is the Notre Dame du Lac Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Political Science. Her research focuses on American political institutions, political methodology, and congressional dynamics, with an emphasis on elite behavior, electoral politics, and computational social science. She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a B.A. in Political Science & International Affairs from the University of Georgia.
Her work examines the rise of political amateurs in U.S. House elections, campaign fundraising strategies, and intra-party dynamics on issues like climate change. She has published extensively on topics such as policy positioning in congressional elections, the consequences of elite actions against elections, and the role of descriptive candidacies in campaign messaging. Porter is on leave during Fall 2025 and Spring 2026.
