Professor Rory O'Connor holds the Chair in Health Psychology at the University of Glasgow, where he directs the Suicidal Behaviour Research Laboratory and leads the Mental Health and Wellbeing research group. His research applies psychological models to understand suicide risk factors and develop prevention strategies, with particular focus on the Integrated Motivational-Volitional model of suicidal behavior.
His work examines psychological processes including entrapment, defeat, and future thinking in suicidal crises. Current projects include developing brief interventions for distress, autism-adapted safety plans, and digital mental health tools. As President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention, he leads global suicide prevention efforts.
Honors include the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Research Award and British Psychological Society Popular Science Book Award for 'When It Is Darkest'. His research has been recognized in Clarivate's Highly Cited Researchers list for top-cited scholarship globally.
Professor O'Connor advises the Scottish Government's National Suicide Prevention Leadership Group and serves as Joint Chief-Editor of Archives of Suicide Research. His team maintains collaborations with NHS services and mental health charities to translate research into clinical practice.
