Dr. Lisa Marzano is a Professor of Psychology and Co-Director of the Centre for Abuse, Trauma and Suicide Studies (CATS) at Middlesex University. Her work focuses on suicide prevention, particularly in public spaces like railways, and the responsible portrayal of suicide in media. She holds a PhD in Psychology from Middlesex University (2007) and has held academic positions since 2005, including Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Oxford’s Centre for Suicide Research (2007–2012).
Her research interests include railway suicide prevention, media guidelines for crisis reporting, and mental health interventions in prisons. She leads initiatives such as the award-winning Small Talk Saves Lives campaign and advises organizations like Transport for London, the National Police Chiefs Council, and Samaritans. Marzano has been recognized with the Nation’s Lifesaver Award (Universities UK, 2019) and a Lifesaver Award from Transport for London.
Teaching includes undergraduate and postgraduate modules in psychology, mental health, and forensic psychology. She currently supervises three PhD students focusing on mental health in elite sports, youth suicide prevention, and student suicide experiences. Marzano also chairs Samaritans’ Research Ethics Board and sits on national suicide prevention groups, including the UK Government’s SPSSS Leadership Group.
Her research outputs span over 100 publications, emphasizing qualitative and mixed-method approaches to understanding suicidal behavior, self-harm, and intervention efficacy. Notable works include analyses of railway suicide deterrents, media coverage impacts, and prison mental health challenges.
