Professor Ronan O'Carroll is a Clinical and Health Psychologist at the University of Stirling, holding roles as past President of the UK Society for Behavioural Medicine and Behaviour Change Expert to NICE's Vaccine Uptake Committee. He leads research in health behavior change, organ donation, and cancer screening adherence. With over 250 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 80, his work spans behavioral medicine, mental health, and public health policy.
Education: BSc (Hons) Biological Sciences (University of Edinburgh, 1979), PhD in Behavioral Endocrinology (1983), clinical psychology training (Edinburgh, 1983-85). Past roles include Assistant Professor at Memorial University, Senior Research Fellow at Stirling, and Professorships at University of St Andrews and later return to Stirling in 2003.
Research focuses on emotion-driven health decisions, including strategies to improve organ donation rates, colorectal cancer screening uptake, and medication adherence. Key projects include the TELBRECS, ARTICS, INORDAR, and IAMSS initiatives. He co-designed interventions like the MAC pharmacy consultation tool and the ActWELL lifestyle program.
