Ron Goetzel is a Senior Scientist and Director of the Institute for Health and Productivity Studies (IHPS) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He is affiliated with the Department of Health, Behavior and Society and the Joint Center & Institute for Health and Productivity Studies (IHPS). Previously, he held faculty positions at Emory and Cornell Universities, establishing a long-standing academic and research career in public health and workplace wellness.
Dr. Goetzel's research centers on workplace health promotion, wellness programs, health risks, return on investment, and applied social psychology. His work evaluates the relationship between employee health, medical costs, and workplace productivity. He is a leading expert in health and productivity management (HPM), outcomes research, and program evaluation, with a strong emphasis on translating research into policy and business practice. His research interests include prevention, mental health in the workplace, cardiovascular disease prevention, and building a culture of health in organizations.
His recent publications demonstrate a strong focus on mental health, organizational best practices, pandemic-related stressors, and the economic value of health programs. He has led the development of tools such as the CDC Worksite Health ScoreCard and the American Heart Association’s Workplace Health Achievement Index, contributing to standardized assessment in the field.
Dr. Goetzel has been honored with several prestigious awards, including:
- Woodward Lecture Award (2002) for leadership in preventive medicine.
- Award for Excellence and Innovation in Value Purchasing from the National Business Group on Health (2008).
- Mark Dundon Research Award from HERO (2011).
- Editor’s Choice Article of the Year from the American Journal of Health Promotion (2019).
He has led numerous high-impact research projects for clients including the CDC, World Bank, IMF, Department of Defense, and major foundations. He has advised on national health strategies and employer wellness programs, such as for Johnson & Johnson. With over 200 peer-reviewed publications, he is a prolific scholar and a sought-after speaker at international forums. His work bridges academia, policy, and the business world, making significant contributions to the science and practice of workplace health.
Dr. Goetzel is actively engaged in research, with publications extending into 2025. He is not retired and continues to direct the IHPS, lead major projects, and publish cutting-edge research on employee health and organizational well-being.
