Romel Gomez is a Professor and Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park. He holds a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the University of Maryland, an MS in Experimental Atomic Physics from Wayne State University, and a BS from the University of the Philippines. His research focuses on magnetism, nanotechnology, and biochemical detection at atomic and molecular scales, with applications in spintronics and molecular sensing. He has co-authored over 100 publications and holds three U.S. patents in nanotechnology. As an educator, he teaches courses in quantum theory, electromagnetism, and engineering design, and has modernized curricula to align with industry and academic trends. He leads initiatives such as the VISSER program for K-12 science education and spearheaded laboratory development in the department. Gomez has held leadership roles in the IEEE Magnetics Society, including General Chair of Intermag 2005, and received prestigious awards including the NSF CAREER Award (2000) and induction into the National Academy of Science and Technology of the Philippines (2019). His work emphasizes hands-on education and international collaboration, with projects benefiting both academic research and practical applications in engineering.
