William D. Phillips

William D. Phillips is a Distinguished University Professor and College Park Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland, College Park. He holds a joint appointment with the Institute for Physical Science and Technology (IPST). His primary affiliation is with the Department of Physics.

His research focuses on advanced quantum physics, including laser cooling and trapping of neutral atoms, quantum information using single-atom qubits, Bose-Einstein condensates, and ultracold atomic collisions. He explores atomic physics systems analogous to condensed matter phenomena and develops atom optics leveraging deBroglie wave coherence.
