William Phillips is a Distinguished University Professor of Physics at the University of Maryland and a NIST Fellow. He was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in Physics for pioneering work in laser cooling and trapping of atoms. His research focuses on quantum physics, including Bose-Einstein condensates, optical lattices, and quantum simulation. Phillips earned his B.S. from Juniata College and his Ph.D. from MIT. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
