Dr. Roland Gillen is a Senior Lecturer in Electronic and Electrical Engineering at Swansea University's Faculty of Science and Engineering. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and an MEng equivalent from the Technical University of Berlin. His research focuses on semiconductor materials' electronic, optical, and vibrational properties, particularly in low-dimensional nanomaterials and heterostructures. Dr. Gillen employs theoretical spectroscopy methods to computationally characterize materials, complementing experimental collaborations.
His expertise includes Density Functional Theory, Many-Body Perturbation Theory, and the study of novel 1D/2D nanomaterials. He has contributed to understanding graphene nanoribbons, defect-engineered semiconductors, and twisted 2D heterostructures. Recent work explores excitonic behavior in MoS2/WSe2 systems and antiferromagnetic silicates.
Dr. Gillen's articles highlight advancements in graphene networks, exciton dynamics, and antimony oxide bilayers. Key grants include a DFG-funded project on interlayer interactions in pnictogen-based heterobilayers (2024) and earlier funding for semiconductor heterostructure research (2013-2014). He has held roles at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen and TU Berlin before joining Swansea.
