Professor Rohit Shankar is a tenured Professor of Neuropsychiatry at the Peninsula Medical School, University of Plymouth, and Director of the Cornwall Intellectual Disability Equitable Research (CIDER) unit. He holds dual roles as Clinical Director at Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Associate Dean for Academic Training at the Royal College of Psychiatrists (RCPsych). His work focuses on translational research in neurodevelopmental/neuropsychiatric disorders, clinical risk management, and health technology implementation, particularly for people with intellectual disabilities (ID) and epilepsy.
He leads national initiatives such as the RCPsych Intellectual Disability Faculty and chairs influential College Reports on epilepsy management and ID care. Notably, his Seizure Safety Checklist and EpSMon app have revolutionized epilepsy risk mitigation, earning awards like the MBE (2018) and international recognition. His research spans over 300 publications, emphasizing ID epilepsy care, de-prescribing strategies, and SUDEP prevention. He also co-developed the UK NIHR Ep-ID Register to study anti-seizure medications in ID populations.
Key achievements include reducing polypharmacy by 50% in Cornwall’s ID epilepsy services and leading the Step Together national report integrating epilepsy care for ID patients. He has secured £ millions in grants for projects like the DECODE AI-driven care stratification and EpSMon digital accessibility. His work aligns with UN SDGs, addressing healthcare equity and mental health.
Prof. Shankar is an Hon. Clinical Associate Professor at Exeter Medical School and Hon. Fellow at Falmouth University. His contributions extend to BBC radio mental health outreach, NHS England policy development, and advancing global epilepsy safety standards through ILAE collaborations.
