Professor Roger Whatmore is a Visiting Professor in the Department of Materials at Imperial College London (since 2013) and an Emeritus Professor at University College Cork. His expertise lies in functional materials, particularly ferroelectrics and multiferroics, with applications in sensors, energy systems, and nanotechnology. He holds fellowships from the Royal Academy of Engineering, Institute of Physics, and Irish Academy of Engineering.
Education: 1st class honours from Cambridge University, PhD from Cavendish Laboratory.
Research interests focus on: ferroelectric ceramics, thin films, and composites; electrocaloric and pyroelectric effects; microsystems engineering; and nanotechnology-driven applications. His work includes developing wearable thermal imagers for firefighters (awarded Prince of Wales Award for Innovation, 1993) and leading Tyndall National Institute as CEO (2006–2012), where he secured €110M in funding and expanded research capacity significantly.
Awards include the GEC Nelson Gold Medal (1993), IOM3 Griffith Medal (2003), and recognition from Science Foundation Ireland for Tyndall’s 'first-rate' research.
Key contributions: Founded Infrared Integrated Systems Ltd; pioneered systems applications of Tyndall’s technology in communications, energy, and healthcare; and advanced electrocaloric cooling systems through PST thin film research.
