Dr. Pamir Alpay is a Professor and Vice President for Research at the University of Connecticut, holding the GE Professorship in Advanced Manufacturing. He leads the UConn Tech Park and serves as Executive Director. His academic roles include Associate Dean for Research and Industrial Partnerships within the School of Engineering. Alpay earned a Ph.D. in Materials Science from the University of Maryland (1999) and completed postdoctoral research there until 2001.
His research focuses on materials theory, computational modeling, and phase transformations in functional materials such as ferroelectrics, multiferroics, and smart materials. Key interests include tunable dielectrics, conducting oxides, and advanced manufacturing applications. Alpay has pioneered studies on thermal strain effects in ferroelectric films and developed models for property optimization in aerospace alloys.
He has received numerous awards, including Fellow of the American Ceramic Society (2018), UConn-AAUP Research Excellence Award (2018), and NSF CAREER Award (2001). His work spans over 200 publications, emphasizing energy-efficient materials, electrocaloric effects, and nanoscale phenomena. Alpay advises multiple PhD students and collaborates with institutions like Argonne National Labs and the Army Research Laboratory.
Grants include an $8M Air Force contract for aerospace materials research (2020) and ongoing projects in pyroelectric energy conversion. His lab at UConn’s Institute of Materials Science (IMS) explores functional materials for next-generation technologies, with a focus on bridging theory and industrial applications.
