Roger Baumann is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Hope College, Holland, Michigan, where he also directs the interdisciplinary Peace and Justice Minor. His research bridges sociology, religious studies, and ethnic studies, focusing on collective identity, race, religion, and transnational social movements.
As a cultural sociologist, Dr. Baumann’s work examines how overlapping racial, religious, and national identities shape social action, particularly in global contexts like the Israel-Palestine conflict. His 2024 book, Black Visions of the Holy Land, and ongoing project on American Evangelicals’ struggles over defining Islam highlight his interdisciplinary approach.
- PhD in Sociology, Yale University (2020)
- MTS in Religion, Ethics & Politics, Harvard University (2009)
- B.A. (Hons) in Religious Studies, University of Waterloo (2007)
His research spans qualitative methods, social theory, and peace studies, with a focus on religio-racial frameworks, pilgrimage dynamics, and the political role of the Black Church. Dr. Baumann’s recent articles explore transnational identity construction, contested religious categories, and the intersection of conservative theology with global activism.
