Rodney Chism

Rodney Chism is an Assistant Professor of Music and Director of Bands at Kentucky State University, where he oversees the Mighty Marching Thorobreds. As an educator, composer, saxophonist, and clinician, he has spent over two decades shaping instrumental music programs and fostering leadership within Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Dr. Chism’s research focuses on music education, HBCU band culture, and leadership dynamics in academic music programs. His scholarly works examine the intersection of institutional identity, alumni engagement, and organizational challenges in HBCU band programs.

His publications highlight trends in HBCU music education, emphasizing cultural preservation and the societal impact of band programs. As a composer and arranger, he has written over 150 works across multiple genres, including the award-winning jazz composition The Plaza (2025).

Rodney Chism founded the Big Band Memphis Professional Stage Band and actively tours as a performer, arranger, and clinician. He has performed with renowned artists like Al Jarreau, Arturo Sandoval, and Bobby Rush, blending academic rigor with professional artistry.
