Roderick Heelis holds the Distinguished Chair in Natural Sciences and Mathematics at The University of Texas at Dallas and serves as Director of the William B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences. He earned his Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics from the University of Sheffield in 1973.
His research focuses on analyzing data from Earth-orbiting satellites to study charged particle dynamics in the upper atmosphere, particularly examining how Earth's magnetic field and electric fields influence plasma behavior. Current investigations involve developing instrumentation for thermal plasma measurements and creating computer models to simulate ionospheric responses to solar variations.
Research publications demonstrate consistent focus on ionospheric dynamics through satellite observations and modeling approaches. Recent work examines VLF transmission, plasma irregularities, and ion temperature measurements, with applications to space weather prediction.
Professor Heelis has received significant recognition including Fellowship in the American Geophysical Union and delivering keynote addresses at major conferences. His research is funded by NASA and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, supporting projects like the Coupled Ion-Neutral Dynamics Investigation (CINDI) instruments.
He maintains an active doctoral program with current research examining longitudinal variations in ion drifts, electromagnetic resonators, and applications of Helmholtz resonators to space science. His laboratory develops new techniques for space plasma measurement and data reduction.
