Phillip Anderson is Professor of Physics and Director of the W.B. Hanson Center for Space Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. His research examines ionospheric and magnetospheric electrodynamics, space weather phenomena, and space environment effects on human systems.
Research areas include:
- Ionosphere-thermosphere coupling mechanisms
- Space weather impacts on satellite operations
- Atmospheric drag effects on LEO satellites
- Auroral precipitation modeling
- Geospace dynamics constellation instrumentation
His work develops models for predicting satellite drag coefficients, large-scale atmospheric disturbances, and cusp location variations. Recent publications investigate gas-surface interactions in upper atmospheres and improvements to orbit propagation techniques. He has contributed instrumentation for NASA's Geospace Dynamics Constellation mission.
Awards and honors:
- NASA Group Achievement Awards (1989, 1998)
- National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship
- Featured research in Geophysical Research Letters
