Roderic Broadhurst is an Emeritus Professor of Criminology at the Australian National University (ANU), affiliated with the School of Regulation and Global Governance and the Research School of Asia and the Pacific. He holds a PhD from the University of Western Australia and an M.Phil from the University of Cambridge. His career includes roles at the University of Hong Kong, Queensland University of Technology, and Griffith University.
His research focuses on organized crime, cybercrime, transnational crime, and violence in post-conflict states like Cambodia. Key projects include the ANU Cybercrime Observatory, studies on darknet markets, and analysis of child exploitation material distribution. He co-authored Violence and the Civilizing Process in Cambodia, examining historical violence patterns in non-Western contexts.
Recent work addresses cybercrime trends, including malware distribution via spam, opioid availability on darknet platforms, and illicit weapon sales. His projects often involve collaboration with criminal justice agencies in Australia, China, and Cambodia. Broadhurst has advised parliamentary committees on law enforcement capabilities regarding child exploitation and cyber threats.
His academic contributions span over 90 publications since 2005, covering organized crime in Asia, cybercrime typologies, and restorative justice outcomes. He has directed major research initiatives, including the ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security.
