Professor Roberta Bivins is a leading historian of medicine and health at the University of Warwick, affiliated with the Department of History within the Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on the intersections of migration, medicine, and public health policy, particularly the medicalization of borders and systemic health inequities. She has led major projects such as the Wellcome Trust-funded study on the cultural significance of the NHS, resulting in a 'People's Encyclopaedia of the NHS' and a virtual museum.
Her academic career includes roles as a Wellcome Lecturer at Cardiff University and Assistant Professor at the University of Houston. She holds a PhD from MIT (1997) and a BA from Columbia University (1991). Her teaching spans undergraduate and postgraduate modules, including 'Surveillance States: Biometrics from the Border to the Bathroom' and 'Foreign Bodies, Contagious Communities: Migration in the Modern World'.
Research interests include genetics, household health practices, and the cultural history of healthcare systems. She has supervised PhDs on topics ranging from urban public hospitals to population studies in India. Awards include Wellcome Trust fellowships, and she currently leads the Centre for the History of Medicine and serves on Warwick's Health Steering Committee.
