Prof Nick Day is a Professor of Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the University of Oxford and Director of the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU). He has led major research initiatives in Asia and Africa since 1991, focusing on clinical and laboratory studies of diseases such as malaria, melioidosis, and sepsis. His work emphasizes multi-center, multi-country collaboration to enhance clinical trial efficacy and result applicability.
Prof Day joined Oxford in 1991 as director of the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam. After returning to the UK, he held roles including Deputy Director of the Centre for Tropical Medicine (1999–2003) and Wellcome Trust Career Development Fellow (1997–2002). Since 2003, he has directed MORU, a Thailand-based unit with a regional network spanning 12 countries, 8 permanent research units, and 50 clinical sites.
His research interests center on combating communicable diseases in rural regions through translational studies and improving global health outcomes. He prioritizes training the next generation of researchers, hosting over 80 postgraduate students annually via MORU’s programs.
