Professor Nicholas PJ Day serves as Professor of Tropical Medicine at the University of Oxford's Nuffield Department of Medicine and Director of the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit (MORU) in Thailand, as well as Director of the Wellcome Trust Thailand Asia and Africa Programme. His work with MORU focuses on combating infectious tropical diseases affecting rural communities across Asia and the developing world.
His research spans epidemiology, diagnosis, pathophysiology, and treatment of malaria, rickettsial diseases, scrub typhus, melioidosis, leptospirosis, influenza, and dengue. Cross-cutting interests include antimicrobial resistance drivers and syndromic management of febrile illnesses in low- and middle-income countries. Recent publications demonstrate his ongoing work in disease modeling, vaccine immunology, historical epidemiology, antimalarial pharmacology, and rural health systems across Asia.
His scientific contributions have been recognized through prestigious fellowships including FRCP (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians) and FMedSci (Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences), alongside his medical degrees (MA, BM BCh, DM).
Professor Day leads an extensive international collaboration network across Southeast Asia, working with researchers in Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam. His MORU unit conducts field research in multiple locations including Bangkok and Mae Sot in Thailand, and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam, focusing on translating research into practical healthcare improvements for vulnerable populations.
