Mayfong Mayxay

Mayfong Mayxay is a Professor in Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Laos, serving as Vice-Rector. He holds visiting professorships at the University of Oxford (Nuffield Department of Medicine) and the National University of Singapore (Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health). He is also a Member of Parliament in the Lao National Assembly.

Education:

• M.D.: University of Health Sciences, Vientiane, Laos
• Ph.D. (Tropical Medicine): Faculty of Tropical Medicine, Mahidol University, Thailand
• Post-Doctoral Training: Mahidol and Oxford Universities

Research Interests: His work focuses on infectious diseases (malaria, dengue, melioidosis, AMR) and public health initiatives, including maternal and child health, vaccines, and drug development. He has pioneered clinical research units and policy platforms in Laos, such as the Lao-Oxford-Mahosot Hospital-Wellcome Trust Research Unit (LOMWRU) and the Unit for Health Evidence and Policy (UHEP).

Awards:

• Recipient of the Mahidol University Medal for Distinguished Service (1998–2009)
• 2024 Outstanding Alumni from Mahidol University
• Ambulatory Pediatric Association International Research Award (2024)

Labs/Teams: He leads LOMWRU and chairs the Lao One Health University Network (LAOHUN), while overseeing UHEP’s policy analysis for public health challenges in Laos.
