Jason Bivins is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at North Carolina State University, affiliated with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. His research focuses on religion and American culture, particularly intersections of religion and politics since 1900. He holds a Ph.D. in Religious Studies from Indiana University (2000), alongside an MA (1995) and BA (1991) from Oberlin College.
His major works include Embattled America (2025), Spirits Rejoice!: Jazz and American Religion (2015), and Religion of Fear (2008). He has been awarded the Choice Outstanding Academic Title for both Spirits Rejoice! and Religion of Fear, and was named a 2025 Obama Institute Fellow. His current project explores marginalized religious figures in American history.
